Written In The Stars (Ode To Columbine)

Think back to years of yesterday when laughter filled the air
And school grounds rang with joyful noise, Not guns and death and terror
What’s come of us? Where’s blame to lay? There’s buzz around for all to hear
Well, we’ve outlawed God in all our schools, Now the end is very grim and clear
The price to pay for empty, desolate halls is finally here and much too dear

Chorus
Sweet scents of jasmine on the vine will link us always now to Columbine
For heroes shine from sea to sea, And what a friend we have in thee!

Oh, Maker of the Universe and Sculptor of the Sky,
Who answers to all different names, but speaks to every mind
When the telephone stops ringing and the postman’s all gone home and they’re alone
When the camera’s next assignment leaves them
Cold and aching for that moment gone so far
Please say there’s claim for every fallen name, a reason to be written in the stars
A monument o’er our vanity reminding why we’re where we are

Chorus
Sweet scents of jasmine on the vine will link us always now to Columbine
For seeds of triumph sprout and bloom, deriding hell born steps of fear and gloom

Bridge
Our land is one of promise, though evil reaps a sorrowful “reward”
And if you dare to doubt it, just, find rest in academia’s “laurels”

Chorus
Sweet scents of jasmine on the vine will link us always now to Columbine
For lessons learned will turn the tide and usher Him right back inside -
Inside Columbine

Lullaby and goodnight, All my love, keep close right by your side
Little child, Lullaby
